Öğe Childhood psychological maltreatment, psychological flexibility, family conflict, and subjective happiness in university students: a serial mediation model(Springer, 2025) Akat, Muhammed; Okur, Sinan; Akbulut, Ömer Faruk; Satıcı Seydi Ahmet; Hamarta, ErdalChildhood psychological maltreatment has psychological, behavioral, and emotional repercussions on individuals in adulthood. These reflections play a role in both the internal distress of individuals and the deterioration of their interpersonal relationships. The aim of this study was to examine the serial mediating role of psychological flexibility and family conflict in the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and subjective happiness. The study was conducted with 493 university students (61.7% female, 38.3% male), with ages ranging from 18 to 53 years (M-age = 24.02, SD = 6.342). The data of this research was analyzed using structural equation modeling. The findings of the study indicate that psychological flexibility and family conflict have a serial mediating role in the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and subjective happiness. The results demonstrated that to improve the subjective happiness of people who have been psychologically abused as children, it is necessary to make them more psychologically flexible and teach them how to deal with family conflict. Overall, these findings emphasize the importance of fostering psychological flexibility and conflict resolution skills as key intervention targets to mitigate the long-term negative effects of childhood psychological maltreatment on subjective happiness. The findings of the study were discussed and interpreted in detail in the light of the relevant literature.Öğe Dark triad personality and phubbing: The mediator role of fomo(SAGE Publications Inc., 2022) Akat, Muhammed; Arslan, Coşkun; Hamarta, ErdalPhubbing among undergraduate has become an area of increasing research interest in recent years. In recent years, studies on phubbing have increased. However, no empirical study has deal with the mediating effect of fear of missing out (FoMO) on the relationship between dark triad and phubbing. The dark triad refers to three personality traits: Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism. Machiavellianism is characterized by prioritizing one’s own wishes and desires. Psychopathy, is a personality trait where lack of emotion and self-control is seen. Narcissism is characterized by low empathy and egocentrism. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine whether FoMO mediator between dark triad and phubbing among undergraduates. For this purpose, structural equation modeling and bootstrapping method was used. Mediation analyses were performed using AMOS 22.00. The present study comprised 506 undergraduate (%70.7 female; %29.3 male). The age of the participants ranged between 18 and 29 (x = 22.41).The measures used included the General Scale of Phubbing, Fear of Missing Out Scale, and Dirty Dozen Scale. The results showed that FoMO mediated the relationship between dark triad and phubbing. The results of bootstrapping procedure indicated that the indirect effect of FoMO on the relationship between dark triad and phubbing was significant. In conclusion, the study suggests that FoMO is a meaningful mediator in the relationship between dark triad and phubbing. Research results are discussed in the light of the related literature and suggestions are presented for future researchers.Öğe Development of online trolling scale: Validity and reliability study(Turkish Psychological Counseling and Guidance Association, 2021) Hamarta, Erdal; Akat, MuhammedThis study aims to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to determine trolling in online environments. Two different study groups were used in the study. The study group for the exploratory factor analysis consisted of 493 university students (72.2% female; 27.8% male). The study group for confirmatory factor analysis consisted of 690 university students (71.7% female; 28.3% male). As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, it was seen that it consisted of 16 items and 3 sub-dimensions that explained 56.80% of the variance. The model obtained after the exploratory factor analysis was tested with confirmatory factor analysis and it was determined that the fit index values were within acceptable limits. The criterion validity of the scale was carried out with the Revised Cyberbullying Scale for University Students. Whereas the Cronbach alpha value for the entire scale was .89 for all of the scales, the same was found for sub-dimensions as .85, .73, and .66. As a result, it can be stated that the scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool.Öğe Doomscrolling and social media addiction in adolescents: a two-wave longitudinal study(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2025) Akat, Muhammed; Hamarta, ErdalIn recent years, various traumatic events such as pandemics, earthquakes, wars, and migration have occurred worldwide. Negative news and content related to these events can be easily accessed on social media, leading to the concept of doomscrolling. Doomscrolling is a recent phenomenon in mental health research and has not yet been sufficiently studied. Therefore, in this study, the longitudinal relationship between social media addiction and doomscrolling was examined. In this study, data were collected at two time points, time 1 (T1) and time 2 (T2), separated by a two-month interval. The study sample comprised 301 adolescents (48.5% female; 51.5% male) from 20 cities in Turkey. Participants were aged 12 to 19 (Mage = 15.55, SD = 1.09). The study employed a Cross-lagged path analytic model for the analysis. The analyses revealed positive and significant relationships between social media addiction and doomscrolling. It was concluded that at T1, addiction to social media had a positive correlation with doomscrolling at T2. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that social media addiction at T1 had a positive correlation with social media addiction at T2. However, the study found that engaging in doomscrolling at T1 did not significantly predict the development of social media addiction at T2. In conclusion, adolescents’ social media addiction levels increase the risk of doomscrolling. These results demonstrate the importance of interventions that include social media addiction in the prevention and treatment of doomscrolling. Mental health professionals can provide interventions that include healthy social media use skills in adolescents to prevent doomscrolling.Öğe ERGENLERİN GELİŞİMSEL REHBERLİK İHTİYAÇLARINI BELİRLEME ÖLÇEĞİNİN (EGRİBÖ) GELİŞTİRİLMESİ(2021) Akat, Muhammed; Peker, AdemBu çalışmanın amacı, ergenlerin gelişimsel rehberlik ihtiyaçlarını (EGRİBÖ) belirleyecek bir\rölçme aracı geliştirmektir. Research aimed at understanding suicidal cognitions among university students may provide theoretical evidence for preventive studies on suicide. Accordingly, the present study aims to investigate how maladaptive thinking styles contribute to suicide cognitions through the serial mediating roles of difficulties in emotion regulation and loneliness. The sample consists of 617 university students (77.6% of the participants are female, Mage = 20.511, SD = 2.307). The correlation analysis revealed that maladaptive thinking styles were positively associated with difficulties in emotion regulation, loneliness, and suicide cognitions. Serial mediation analysis was conducted using the PROCESS macro (Model 6), which revealed that difficulties in emotion regulation and loneliness have a serial mediating role in the relationship between maladaptive thinking styles and suicide cognitions. The results have practical implications for developing intervention strategies targeting emotion regulation and loneliness to reduce suicide risk among university students. The research results are discussed and interpreted in the light of the literature.Öğe Problematic social media use and social connectedness in adolescence: the mediating and moderating role of family life satisfaction(Springer, 2020) Savcı, Mustafa; Akat, Muhammed; Ercengiz, Mustafa; Griffiths, Mark D.; Aysan, FerdaProblematic social media use (PSMU) among adolescents has become an area of increasing research interest in recent years. It is known that PSMU is negatively associated with social connectedness. The present study examined the role of family life satisfaction in this relationship by investigating its mediating and moderating role in the relationship between problematic social use and social connectedness. The present study comprised 549 adolescents (296 girls and 253 boys) who had used social media for at least 1 year and had at least one social media account. The measures used included the Social Media Disorder Scale, Social Connectedness Scale, and Family Life Satisfaction Scale. Mediation and moderation analyses were performed using Hayes's Process program. Regression analysis showed that PSMU negatively predicted family life satisfaction and social connectedness. In addition, family life satisfaction and PSMU predicted social connectedness. Mediation analysis showed that family life satisfaction had a significant mediation effect in the relationship between PSMU and social connectedness. Family life satisfaction was partially mediated in the relationship between PSMU and social connectedness. Moderation analysis showed that family life satisfaction did not have a significant effect on the relationship between PSMU and social connectedness. The study suggests that family life satisfaction is a meaningful mediator (but not a moderator) in the relationship between problematic social media use and social connectedness.Öğe Psychological effects of COVID-19 pandemic on society and ıts reflections on education(2020) Akat, Muhammed; Karataş, KasımPandemics have been seen in many periods throughout history. Pandemics are diseases that cause millions of people to die and have great negative effects on the psychological health of society. It also disrupted the students ' educational process. Pandemics such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Spanish flu which have appeared in the past and threatened the health of people, have also led to negative consequences in people's psychology. Today, people are struggling with a pandemic COVID-19, which was first seen in Wuhan, China. COVID-19, like other pandemics, affected a large number of people in a very short time after it appeared and caused many people to die. The COVID-19 pandemic affects people psychologically because the spread of it still continues, death rates increase day by day, life comes to a halt and its control time is unpredictable. Like the traumatic experiences that have caused many psychological problems on humans throughout history, COVID-19 will have a negative psychological effect on every person. Scientific research on COVID-19 is of great importance in order to prevent the destructiveness of it in social, political, psychological, educational and economic dimensions. After the COVID-19 epidemic has been controlled over time, the psychological effects on people will be clearer. It is estimated that its effect will cause many problems in the short and long term. In this study, the possible psychological effects of COVID-19 on children, youth, elderly people and healthcare staff were discussed in the light of theoretical information. In order to minimize negative psychological effects, some recommendations were presented.Öğe The relationship between anxious-ambivalent attachment and social appearance anxiety in adolescents: The serial mediation of positive youth development and ınstagram addiction(SAGE Publications Inc., 2023) Ekinci, Nezir; Akat, MuhammedThe prevalence of social appearance anxiety among adolescents has increased in recent years. It can be said that one of the reasons for this situation is appearance-oriented social media applications. Attachment styles in adolescents may play a role in social appearance anxiety, as in many types of anxiety. However, adolescents’ positive youth development levels may have a protective role against social appearance anxiety. Therefore, this study investigated the serial mediator roles of Instagram addiction and positive youth development in the relationship between anxious-avoidant attachment style and social appearance anxiety in adolescents. The research was carried out with 508 high school students. As a result of the research, it was determined that anxious-avoidant attachment and Instagram addiction predicted social appearance anxiety positively. It was determined that positive youth development predicted social appearance anxiety negatively. In addition, mediating roles in the relationship between positive youth development and Instagram addiction, anxious-avoidant attachment and social appearance anxiety were found significant in the study.Öğe Trait anxiety, dispositional hope and mental well-being: examining longitudinal mediation(BioMed Central Ltd, 2025) Akat, Muhammedhe associations among trait anxiety, dispositional hope, and mental well-being have been examined in cross-sectional studies. However, no longitudinal research has examined the relationships between these variables, creating a significant gap in the literature. This study collected data at two-time points (T1–T2) at six-month intervals. The study’s participants were 297 adolescents. This study employed a longitudinal design to investigate whether trait anxiety (T2) and dispositional hope (T2) mediate the association between trait anxiety (T1) and mental well-being (T2) in a sample of Turkish adolescents. A cross-lagged panel model was used in this study for a half-longitudinal design to test mediation. The results showed that dispositional hope (T2) had a longitudinal mediating role in the relationship between trait anxiety (T1) and mental well-being (T2). Additionally, it was found that trait anxiety (T2) had a longitudinal mediating role in the relationship between trait anxiety (T1) and mental well-being (T2). Based on the findings of this study, mental health professionals may utilize hope-oriented interventions in the prevention of trait anxiety among adolescents.Öğe Üniversite öğrencilerinde flört şiddetine yönelik tutum, duygu düzenleme stratejileri ve ilişki doyumunun incelenmesi(2023) Akat, Muhammed; Bakioğlu, Fuad; Ercan, HülyaBu çalışmanın amacı üniversite öğrencilerinde flört şiddetine yönelik tutum ile duygu düzenleme becerileri ve romantik ilişki doyumunun incelenmesidir.
