Factors Associated with Upper Extremity Functionality After Mini-Open Release Surgery for Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
(2024) Yetiş, Mehmet; Canlı, Mehmet; Kuzu, Şafak; Valamur, İrem; Kocaman, Hikmet; Yıldız, Nazım Tolgahan; Özüdoğru, Anıl
Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between upper extremity functionality, pain intensity, muscle strength, and symptom severity among patients diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) who underwent mini-open release surgery. Material and Method:This retrospective study entailed the review of medical records of 70 patients diagnosed with CTS who underwent mini-open release surgery between January 2021 and January 2023. Data were collected from preoperative assessments and routine follow-up evaluations conducted at 3 months post-surgery. Upper extremity functionality was assessed utilizing the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, pain severity was determined using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), muscle strength was evaluated through hand grip strength, and disease severity was measured using the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ). Results: A statistically significant improvement was observed in DASH questionnaire scores, VAS scores, hand grip strength, and BCTQ scores at the 3-month follow-up compared to preoperative values (p<0.05). Furthermore, significant correlations were found between DASH questionnaire scores and VAS scores, hand grip strength, and BCTQ scores during postoperative assessments (p<0.05). Conclusion: Mini-open-release surgery demonstrates effectiveness as a surgical approach for achieving favorable clinical outcomes in patients with CTS. Furthermore, our findings suggest that postoperative upper extremity functionality may be influenced by factors such as pain intensity, symptom severity, and hand grip strength. Therefore, we advocate for the integration of these factors into postoperative patient evaluation protocols and treatment programs to optimize patient outcomes.

Investigation of Factors Associated with Pain Level in Individuals with Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain
(2023) Kocaman, Hikmet; Alkan, Halil; Ceylan, İsmail; Canlı, Mehmet; Kuzu, Şafak
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors associated with pain levels in individuals with chronic non-specific low back pain (CSLBP). Material and Methods: A total of 90 patients (44 males and 46 females) diagnosed with CS LBP were included in the study. Pain level was assessed by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), body balance was assessed statically and dynamically by the Biodex Stability System, quadriceps femoris muscle strength was assessed by an isometric dynamometer, and disability level was assessed by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). A linear regression analysis was performed to determine the factors affecting pain level. Results: According to the results of linear regression analysis, static balance (anteroposterior, mediolateral, and general), dynamic balance (anteroposterior, mediolateral, and general), ODI, and quadriceps femoris muscle strength (left, right) explained 98.1% of the variance. In addition, all sub-parameters of dynamic balance (general p=0.000, anteroposterior p=0.001, mediolateral p=0.008) and ODI (p=0.000) were independent predictors of pain level. Conclusion: It was determined that pain level was associated with balance, muscle strength (quadriceps femoris), and disability level in individuals with CSBP. It was also observed that dynamic balance and ODI were factors affecting the pain level.

Investigation of the relationship between fatigue with vitamin D, disease stage, anxiety and physical activity level in patients with Parkinson's disease
(2024) Yetiş, Aysu; Canlı, Mehmet; Kuzu, Şafak; Valamur, İrem; Duran, Selcen; Şahin, Burc Esra; Kocaman, Hikmet
Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between fatigue severity with vitamin D level, disease stage, anxiety and, physical activity level in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods: This study included 66 (male=38, female=28) individuals diagnosed with PD. Fatigue severity was evaluated by the fatique severity scale, vitamin D level by blood test results, anxiety by the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), disease stage by Hoehn- Yahr (HY) staging, and physical activity level by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-short form). Results: The study included 66 (male=38, female=28) individuals diagnosed with PD. Fatigue severity was assessed by the fatique severity scale, vitamin D level by blood test results, anxiety by the BAI, disease stage by HY staging, and physical activity level by the IPAQ-short form. In addition, a significant correlation was found between fatigue severity with vitamin D level, anxiety, disease stage, and physical activity level in men, women, and all patients (p<0.05). Conclusion: In Parkinson’s patients, fatigue may be related to disease stage, anxiety, physical activity level, and vitamin D level. We suggest that these results should be taken into consideration in fatigue coping strategies for patients with PD.

Investigation of the validity, reliability and psychometric properties of the turkish version of the ottawa sitting scale in patients with parkinson's disease
(2025) Yetiş, Aysu; Canlı, Mehmet; Yıldız, Nazım Tolgahan; Kocaman, Hikmet; Yıldırım, Hasan; Kuzu, Şafak; Valamur, İrem; Duran, Selcen
The Ottawa Sitting Scale is a tool for the multidimensional assessment of sitting balance. This study aimed to investigate the validity, reliability, and psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Ottawa Sitting Scale (OSS-TR) in Turkish-speaking patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The study included 56 patients diagnosed with PD based on the UK Brain Bank Criteria. Construct validity of the OSS-TR was established through the evaluation of structural and convergent validity. Explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were carried out to determine the structural validity. Convergent validity was analysed by examining the relationships between OSS-TR with the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS). The test-retest reliability of the scale was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The good fit determined according to the model fit criteria based on the CFA results confirmed the structural validity. Furthermore, the high associations between OSS-TR with the BBS (r = 0.766) and TIS (r = 0.720) supported convergent validity (p < 0.05). Test-retest reliability of the OSS-TR was excellent (ICC = 0.867). Moreover, internal consistency was high (Cronbach's alpha = 0.948). The OSS-TR is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing sitting balance in Turkish-speaking PD patients. Regarding the results of the study, OSS-TR can be considered useful in the evaluation of sitting balance among PD patients in clinical and research settings.
