Özet
Nature is an abundant source of biologically active compounds. Carotenoids are natural products that exhibit provitamin A activity in the human body. Retinoids are chemicals that are related to vitamin A. Chaperone proteins in the retinoid pathway carry lipophilic retinoids and solubilize them in the aqueous environment of the cell. Dietary absorption, protection from oxidation, storage, metabolism, and the functions of retinoids are highly dependent on these chaperone proteins. This chapter first describes the relation of retinoids to carotenoids, continues by introducing the retinoid pathway, and finalizes with the expression, structure, and function of chaperone proteins that are involved in the retinoid pathway. The regulation of chaperone proteins in the retinoid pathway in cancer is particularly emphasized. Further translational studies that report the consequences of targeting chaperone proteins in the retinoid pathway for the treatment of cancer patients can reveal the potential of these proteins. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
