Özet
Syedra Ancient City which is among the most magnificent cities of the Mountainous Cilicia Region, is located within the borders of Seki Village of Alanya district. The city is thought to take its name from the Sedre Stream and is located on a very high hill. The first systematic excavations started in the city in 2019 were carried out in the frigidarium section of the Great Bath complex, just south of the colonnaded street. During the studies carried out in this area, a rare floor mosaic with a width of 7.9 m and a length of 21.91 m, made in the opus tessellate technique, was encountered. It is seen that the twelve works of Heracles are depicted on the floor mosaic, which is surrounded by a geometric patterned border formed by the use of multi-colored tesserae on a black background. This study about the mosaic, which has not yet been encountered in Cilicia and other neighboring regions, includes the first evaluations. It is aimed to determine the date of construction by comparing them with similar examples in the nearby region and to determine whether there was interaction with other workshop in the surrounding cities in the light of the geometric and figurative decorations that determine the stylistic characteristics of the mosaic. The studies conducted in this direction suggest that the Heracles mosaic at Syedra is similar to the mosaics of Zeugma and Antioch/Antakya in terms of stylistic characteristics and that it may be appropriate to date it to the early 3rd century AD. © 2023, Bursa Uludag University.
