Özet

Our objective was determination of proportional reasoning skills in Science education with context-based knowledge acquisition questions and to examine the opinions of pre service science teachers. 51 pre-service teachers studying in the third year of a Science Education Department in Turkey participated in the research. The case study design was used. The data were collected using the Proportional Reasoning Skills Test (PRST) consisting of 10 context-based knowledge acquisition questions within the scope of Pascal's Principle and an opinion form consisting of 2 open-ended questions. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics (frequency, percent, mean, standard deviation) and content analysis. We have found that 62.8% of the pre-service science teachers' proportional reasoning skills were sufficient. It turns out that the correct solution strategy used by the pre-service teachers in solving the questions is unit rate (straight multiplication) (Level 3); incorrect solution strategies include cross-product (Level 2), equivalent fraction (Level 2), change multiplier (Level 1), data neglect (Level 0), and additive relationship (Level 0). It is concluded that the opinions of pre-service teachers on the use of context-based knowledge acquisition questions in determining proportional reasoning skills in science education are generally positive. 27.5% of the pre-service teachers replied that these questions can be used in both process and result assessment stages of the education-teaching process.
