İlteriş Kağan öldükten sonra 692 yılında Göktürk tahtına oturan Kapgan Kağan, yirmi dört yıl tahtta kalmış ve Çin karşısında büyük başarılar elde etmiştir. Kaynaklarda Çin’in kadın hükümdarı Wu Zetian’i dize getirdiği ve bu sayede pek çok talebinin yerine getirildiği görülmektedir. Kapgan’ın bu gücünden etkilenen Yan Zhiwei adlı Tang memuru, Kapgan’a tâbi olmuş ve kendisine ‘Güney Kağanı’ unvanı verilmiştir. Böylelikle Kapgan’la birlikte Çin’e akınlar düzenlemiş ve Çinli askerleri Kapgan’a direnmekten vazgeçirmeye çalışmıştır. Ancak bu davranışı hem kendinin hem de ailesinin katledilmesine sebep olmuştur. Bu çalışmada Çince kaynaklardan Yan Zhiwei hakkında kayıt bulunan Eski ve Yeni Tang Kayıtları, Zizhi Tongjian, Taiping Guang Ji adlı kaynaklar kullanılmış ve Yan Zhiwei’in biyografisi ile Kapgan’a elçi olarak gönderilişi sonrasında meydana gelen olaylar ele alınmıştır.
Kapgan Qaghan, who ascend the throne of Turkic Khaganate in 692 after Ilteris Qaghan’s dead, remained on the throne for twenty four years and achieved great success against China. It is seen in the sources he brought China’s female ruler Wu Zetian to heel, and thanks to this situation many of his requests were fulfilled. The Tang official named Yan Zhiwei, who impressed by Kapgan's power, was subject to Kapgan and the title of ‘Southern Qaghan’ given to him. Thus, he planned battles with Kapgan against China and tried to get Chinese soldiers to give up resisting to Kapgan. However, this attitude led to murder of both himself and his family. In this study, among Chinese sources Old and New Tang Records, Zizhi Tongjian, Taiping Guang Ji which contain records about Yan Zhiwei are used and Yan Zhiwei's biography and events after his being sent as an envoy to Kapgan are dealt with.
