Bu çalışmada Josef’in gerçek ailesini arama sürecinde Mardin’in tarihi, coğrafyası ve insanlarıyla Abbara/Bir Umudun Masalı romanına yansıyan özelliklerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Ahmet Tezcan is one of the most important writers of recent Turkish literature with his works in the context of cinema and TV series scenarios, novels and children literature. The process of searching the real family of a US citizen named Josef in Mardin is explained in the novel "Abbara / A Tale of Hope" published by Ahmet Tezcan in 2019. Josef knows the woman he addresses with the name Betty as his mother; and Mr. Bacon, whom he thinks is his father, left Josef and Betty years ago. In a letter given by Betty's lawyer with her will, Josef learns that Betty and Mr. Bacon are not his real parents. Josef’s photo taken in front of an abbara on the lap of Mr. Bacon when he was a baby is the only clue for him to reach his real family. Josef first goes to Matera, Italy and then to Mardin, and learns that the abbara in the photo is in Mardin. Josef learns that his real mother because of a disease called “chimera disowned him" and that he was taken by Mr. Bacon and Caroline from US intelligence. Ultimately, Josef obeys Betty's will and buries her in Mardin, and then he settles in Mardin. In the novel, in which the process of searching Josef's real family is explained, it is noticed that the author touches on many historical, geographical and social elements about Mardin. The first of them is abbara in Mardin. It is learned that the Abbara is the name of the tunnels connecting the houses under the ground in Mardin. The meaning of Mesopotamia, which is described as the sea in the novel, is mentioned. It is seen that historical personalities of different religions are accepted as common values in Mardin. It is stated that people from different religions respect each other's holy days and neighborhood has an important place in Mardin. It is stated that many languages are spoken in Mardin and people are not biased when they take words from their neighbors' languages. In addition to this, the author includes Mardin Castle, the city that is divided into two as the old and the new city, the mystery of the water channels, the meaning and importance of pigeons and illegal tea, and the architectural features of the houses. In this study, it is aimed to examine the history, geography and people of Mardin, which are reflected in the novel named Abbara / A Tale of Hope.
