Burada yer adı bilimi ile kastedilen, yer adlandırmalarının farklı göstergesel anlamları bağlamında incelenmesidir. Yer adları, içinde var oldukları farklı siyasi bağlamların yansımasıdır. Konuya çeviribilimsel açıdan yaklaşıldığında -genellikle- çevirmenlerin, mesajı kaynak metindeki şekliyle aktarmaları beklenmektedir. Peki, çevrilecek ögelerin dil dışı ve kültürel özellikleri göz önünde bulundurulduğunda bu durum her zaman mümkün müdür? Yer adları her zaman için belirli bir bağlam ile ilintilidir; dolayısıyla bu yer adları, siyasi eylemlere yönelik olsun veya olmasın, bir düşünce ve inançlar bütünü olan ideolojilerin aktarıcısı olma özelliğine sahiptir. Dolayısıyla söylem içerisinde bu yer adları, kullanıcılarının onlara atfettiği farklı anlamlar hakkında da bilgi vermiş olmaktadır. Bu çalışma, entelektüel modeller ile bireylerin ve kültürlerin iletişim sürecinde kendini gösteren ideolojilerin aktarımına doğrudan katkı sağlayan, medyada geçen kutsal yer adlarının imaj ve söylemsel kimliğini çeviribilim perspektifinden incelemeyi amaç edinmektedir.Öğe Comparison of subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing guidelines implemented across countries(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2021) Gürkan, AliSubtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDH) guidelines assume a prominent role in providing access to audiovisual materials by setting standards that enable the service providers to offer subtitles specifically tailored to cater for the needs and preference of the hearing-impaired viewers. In the absence of guidelines that do not take the viewers’ needs into account, the subtitles run the risk of adversely affecting the viewing experience of the deaf since it would vary from one supplier to the other. This article offers a descriptive analysis of the guidelines implemented in countries with ample experience in the production and broadcast of SDH, such as Canada, the UK and the USA, with the aim of discovering the prevailing norms in these varied socio-cultural contexts. The norms and conventions that regulate the provision of SDH services in these countries are compared to reveal not only their commonalities but also the issues that cause controversy and tend to vary across the different guidelines. The key parameters are grouped and discussed under four broad categories, namely, the layout and presentation of subtitles on screen, the temporal dimension, linguistic issues and non-linguistic information. The results of the analysis and comparison of the guidelines form a strong starting point for the development of guidelines which specifically cater for the needs and preferences of the Turkish deaf viewers.Öğe 19. yüzyıl İngiliz seyahatnamelerinde Kıbrıs(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2021) Öztürk, Çiğdem; Uysal, MehmetTürkiye’nin hemen güneyinde bulunan ve stratejik açıdan çok önemli bir konuma sahip olan Kıbrıs, tarih boyunca çok sayıda medeniyete ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Ada, hala dünyanın en önemli iç denizlerinden birisi olan Akdeniz’in doğusuna her açıdan hakimdir. 1571 ile 1878 yılları arasında Osmanlı egemenliği na giren ve günümüzde kuzeyinde KKTC adıyla bir Türk devleti bulunan adanın statüsü uslararası bir sorun olmaya devam etmektedir. Bu sorunun esas başlangıç noktası olan İngiliz hakimiyetine geçtiği 1878 yılının hemen öncesi ve çokça daha sonrası İngiliz seyahatnamesinde Kıbrıs’ın nasıl tasvir edildiği bu makalenin konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Bu makalede şu altı gezginin seyahatnameleri incelenmiştir: David George Hogarth, Luigi Palma di Cesnola, Henry Rider Haggard, James Monroe Buckley, Samuel White Baker, William Hurrell Mallock. Bu seyyhların gezi notları ile İngiliz dış politikası arasında bir bağlantı olup olmadığı araştırılmıştır. İncelenen eserlerdeki Türk imgesi bu araştırmanın bir başka inceleme konusudur. Gezginlerin yazdıklarına dayanarak Kıbrıs adasının 19. yüzyıldaki resmi çizilmeye çalışılmıştır. Seyahatnamalerde oryantalist bir bakış açısının varlığı ve sebepleri de ayrıca sorgulanmıştır.Öğe Human exceptionalism, precariousness, and economy of sameness in John Lanchester’s The Wall(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2021) Yılmaz, HakanJohn Lanchester’s The Wall (2019) presents a dystopic world where climate change in the form of extreme rising sea levels has caused the majority of the landmasses to be inundated and millions of people to lose their homes, transforming them into environmentally displaced people who try to survive in the open seas. In the novel, miraculously affected by climate change only in a limited way, Britain builds a ten-thousand-kilometer-long wall that circumscribes all its borders to keep not only the water out but also the environmentally displaced others. Given this double function of the wall, this article aims to discuss this image of the wall, first, as a reflection of human exceptionalism which gives off the false impression that even a climate disaster at that scale is still somehow tractable. Second, it further argues that the wall acts as a catalyst for perpetuating an economy of sameness or self-identity that deliberately ignores and increases the vulnerability and precarity of others by creating an impassable divide between insiders (i.e. those inside the wall) and outsiders (i.e. the environmentally displaced people)—a divide that not only maximizes the precarity of the latter group but also casts their lives as disposable.Öğe Coleridgean radicalism and the south west circle(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2021) İşçi, VeyselAlthough radical thoughts of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the “Big Six” pioneers of Romantic era in British Literature and his effects over the refinement of the eighteen-century English society have been widely discussed, not much attention has been drawn into the underlying backdrop and principal grounds that he founded his anomalous ideas on. Even though some critical studies shed some light on his relationships with the marginal communities in Bristol, there is still much to say about the intellectual development of a genius mind. In this respect, this paper aims to address how Coleridge’s main ideas such as pantisocracy, Unitarianism and political radicalism were shaped, what drove him to adopt such radical opinions, and what role the Dissenting circle in Bristol played in shaping Coleridge’s intellectual mind. To do so, the present study first presents a brief introduction to Coleridge’s biography, focusing on significant turning points that shaped his radical personality and thoughts. Then, the study examines the social, theological and political thoughts of this genius poet who had a great influence on British Romanticism.Öğe Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio ve kültürlerarasılık(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2021) Özgüler, CerenUlusal ya da etnik açıdan azınlık kültürlere mensup kişilerin, kendi kültürlerini yaşatabilmeleri, kendilerini özgürce ifade ederken hiçbir ayrımcılığa maruz kalmadan yaşamlarını sürdürebilmeleri günümüz dünyasında hala çözülmesi gereken bir sorun olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bugün çok sayıda ulusun içinde barındırdığı kültürel çeşitlilik, baskın kültürün daha zayıf olana karşı tutumu sebebiyle birçok beklenmedik çatışmanın olmasına neden olur. İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nın sona ermesini takip eden yıllar, bağımsızlık ve özgürlük taleplerinin damgasını vurduğu dekolonizasyon hareketine tanıklık yapmıştır. Bu konuya yalnızca ululslararası örgütler ya da uluslar tarafından değil, İkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında doğan yazarlar tarafından da önem verilmiştir. Önceleri “vahşi” olarak kabul edilmiş kültürlerin varlığına karşı duyarlı bazı yazarlar, barış içinde birlikte yaşamanın ancak bütün kültürlerin tanınmasıyla mümkün olabileceğini vurgulamışlardır. Bu post-kolonyalizm ortamında doğan ve 2008 yılında Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü’nü alan Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, kitaplarının yanı sıra, verdiği çeşitli röportajlarında ve yaptığı konuşmalarda, Batı kültürü ve yerli kültürlerin bir arada bulunabilmesinin ancak yeni bir birlikte yaşama biçimi olan kültürlerarasılık kavramının yaygınlaşmasıyla mümkün olabileceğine vurgu yapar. Kültürlerarasılık kavramının insanların bir arada ve barış içinde yaşayabilmesi için tek çare olduğunu savunurken, sıklıkla suistimal edilen yerli kültürlerin korunmasına yönelik olarak çalışmalar yapmaktadır. Çalışmamızda bu bağlamda, J.-M.G. Le Clézio’nun romanları dışında kalan röportaj ve konuşmalarından çeşitli örnekleri kültürlerarasılık kavramı üzerinden okumaya çalışacağız.Öğe Subtitle translation of allusions from english to turkish: The case of Sherlock series(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2021) Tarakçıoğlu, Aslı Özlem; Boynukara, EmrahIntertextuality, by and large, appears in a wide range of fields including literature, arts and audiovisual contents. One of the prominent areas of its existence is in films and TVseries where it is often presented as allusions. Subtitle translation of culture-specific items such as allusions has been a significant issue as mass media technologies and contents have started to circulate around the globe in an increasing swiftness. Regarding the spatial and temporal restrictions of subtitling which, to some extent, seem to be problematic especially with the culture-bound sections, it is crucial to render the allusions in the best way possible. In the subtitle translation of allusions, translators mostly tend to retain the original and keep the source text allusions intact. Within the framework of Kristeva's concept of intertextuality, this study aimed at identifying the allusions in the TV series Sherlock and categorizing them according to Leppihalme's (1997) classification of allusions based on a quantitative research analysis. Following Leppihalme's suggested strategies, the present study sought to find what strategies were employed for the subtitle translation of these allusions in Sherlock. The results indicated that retention was the most frequent and appropriate strategy for the NP(Proper-name) allusions, and literal and standard translations for the KP(Keyphrase) allusions.Öğe The impact of islamic opinions on social culture transferred from the middle east through translation(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2021) Tosun, Muharrem; Güneş, İskenderThe political and social transformations that took place in Turkey and in the world after 1960 had important effects on broadcasting and translation life. The environment brought by the libertarian constitutional arrangements based on the post-1960s also led to a break in publishing and translation activities, which were harsh compared to previous years. Especially among the youth in Turkey, different ideas have started to find value and ground. Each group started to translate works that could serve as a source for their own worldviews. These studies have become tools for proving their ideas and ideologies to the groups against them and even persuading them. The aim of an Islamic social transformation by translating the foreign resources needed for religious social life into Turkish has led to the formation of a new social paradigm in Turkey. The thought of Islamism in Turkey, which is one of the intellectual movements affected by the political and social events taking place abroad, started to enter our country in different ways through translations in this process. A full understanding of the scope and content of translations of Islamic works from the Middle East Islamic World after the 1960s will enable a more efficient understanding of this period. Islamist movements, which were very different and new from the traditional Islamic culture that had settled in the Anatolian geography until this period, rapidly changed the perception of Islam in Turkey. The effects of Islamist movements transmitted through translation on Turkey's social and political life have been continuing for years. In the study, the purpose of the translations, the nature of the organizations that made the translations and the experiences of publishing houses from different groups in the translation process were examined from the perspective we presented above. As a result, with this study, the contribution of Islamist formations in Turkey to Turkey's accumulation through translations as a result of their interaction with the Islamic world has been tried to be conveyed.Öğe Anton Çehov'un “Acı” adlı öyküsüne göstergebilimsel bir bakış(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2021) Tekin, AbdullahGöstergebilim, bir metne metin içi bağıntılar açısından yaklaşılmasını öneren bir yöntemdir. Bu yöntemi benimseyen araştırmacılar, metnin, derin düzeyden yüzeysel düzeye doğru farklı (zıt) öğelerin eklemlenmesiyle ortaya çıkan bir yapı olduğunu öne sürer. Göstergebilimcilere göre bütün yazınsal metinlerin özünde aynı işlevleri yerine getiren eyleyenler vardır. V.Proop incelediği olağanüstü Rus masallarında 31 işlev saptar. Greimas bu işlevleri 6’ya indirir ve bir eyleyenler şeması geliştirir. Bu şemadan hareketle anlatının derin düzeyini açıklamaya yarayan bir ‘göstergebilimsel dörtgen’ tasarlar. Greimas’ın göstergebilim kuramından hareketle bir metin, 1. Yüzeysel Yüzey, 2. Derin Düzey olarak temelde iki düzeyde çözümlenir. Yüzeysel Düzey’de metnin “Anlatı Düzeyi ve Söylem Düzeyi” incelenirken Derin Düzey’de metnin “Mantıksal-Anlamsal Düzeyi” incelenir. Anlatının derin düzeyi, ayrıca göstergebilimsel dörtgen üzerinde görselleştirilir. Bu bilgilerden hareketle bu çalışmada amaç Rus yazar Anton Çehov’un “Acı” adlı öyküsünü göstergebilimsel açıdan incelemektir. Çalışmanın yöntemi doküman incelemesidir. Bu noktada, söz konusu öykü Greimas göstergebilimine göre incelenmiş ve Greimas göstergebilimindeki kavramlardan hareketle öykünün yüzeysel ve derin yapısı ortaya çıkartılmıştır.
