Öğe The explanatory power of Carnegie Classification in predicting engagement indicators: a multilevel analysis(Frontiers Media SA., 2024) Gök, Enes; Aydın, BurakThe study aims to explore the effect of the type of higher education institution on students’ engagement. The meta-analyses of multilevel regression coefficients revealed significant relationships between the type of higher education institution and student engagement indicators across the years from 2013 to 2019. Comparing different types of higher education institutions with the base category, our findings revealed significant differences in effective teaching practices, discussion with diverse others, and student-faculty interaction consistent throughout the years. These findings are expected to provide insights for institutional administrators, policymakers, and researchers given that student engagement in higher education has become an indicator of quality all around the world.Öğe The impact of higher education on unemployed Turkish people's attitudes toward gender: A multilevel analysis(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2019) Gök, Enes; Aydın, Burak; Weidman, John C.This study investigated the effect of college on unemployed people's attitudes toward gender in Turkey. Gender, age, income, and the number of household members were also included in the model as well as college and gender interaction. The data were publicly available and collected by a team of researchers sponsored by the World Bank), the Spanish Impact Evaluation Fund, the Gender Action Plan, and the Turkish Labor Agency (ISKUR). The study included responses from a random sample of 5902 unemployed people in Turkey. Findings from the multivariate analysis revealed that unemployed people with a college degree have more egalitarian gender attitudes than unemployed people who did not hold a college degree, and females were found to be more egalitarian compared to their male counterparts. Findings did not reveal any significant effects of a college by gender interaction on gender attitudes. The number of household members had a meaningful impact on people's gender attitudes. The results confirm a college and gender effect on the attitudes of people toward dual-earning. Income is also a significant predictor on how people see dual-eamingin the family. In the second level analysis, findings indicate that people living in cities with higher socio-economic development scores have more egalitarian attitudes toward gender.Öğe Intercultural effectiveness of ınternational and domestic university students: A case of Turkey(University Printing Services, 2022) Avcılar, Ahsen; Gök, EnesAmong the vast and diverse discussions and research on international students, the intercultural status of university students holds a special place in terms of integration and academic success. One of the discussions is the intercultural competencies of the students in higher education. In this respect, this study aims to compare the intercultural effectiveness of international and domestic students, as well as examine their intercultural effectiveness status in terms of different background characteristics. The data were collected from a public university in Turkey using the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale developed by Portalla and Chen. The findings revealed that international students compared with domestic counterparts show a higher level of intercultural effectiveness. Additionally, some background characteristics are significant predictors of the intercultural effectiveness of university students: grade level, parent’s nationality, being and living in a foreign country, and having a close friend(s) from a different culture. Some research and policy recommendations are provided.Öğe A review of research on ınternational student mobility: Science mapping the existing knowledge base(SAGE Publications, 2019) Gümüs, Sedat; Gök, Enes; Esen, MuratAmong the increasing number of academic publications in the field of higher education, studies focusing on internationalization of higher education are on the exponential phase in the last couple of decades. In these efforts, the research on international student mobility (ISM) has been a priority. This current review research uses science mapping tools to examine Web of Science (WoS)-indexed journal publications focusing on ISM. The purpose of the review is to demonstrate the development of ISM research in the last three decades. The findings, revealed from an examination of 2,064 publications, suggest that ISM research has significantly expanded since 2005. Findings also reveal crucial information regarding the authors' country of origin as well as country collaborations and the most influential scholars in the field by demonstrating networks around the world. Topical foci analysis is also included in the study to show current patterns in ISM research. Discussions and suggestions are expected to provide a basis for countries and international organizations in their policy development efforts related to international students and a ground and direction for future research on ISM.Öğe The role of studying abroad in attitudes toward immigration: A european context(University Printing Services, 2022) Öz, Yakup; Gök, EnesInternational student mobility has been rising as a global phenomenon in the last few decades, while its impact could be various in different contexts. For the European Union (EU), studying in another EU member country could be regarded as an important factor for the solidarity and integrity of the Union. The current study elaborates on the role of studying abroad regarding the attitudes of people toward immigration in the EU. It shows that people who are studying in an EU member country, belonging to higher social classes and from EU15 countries, are more likely to have positive attitudes toward immigration. But after controlling several socio-demographic variables studying abroad still contributes positively to the attitudes of EU citizens toward immigration. Accordingly, current study provides promising pieces of evidence on the social contribution of studying abroad for both future research and policymakers.
